Thynne + Macartney’s Disputes + Insolvency group has welcomed Special Counsel Jos Basson.
Jos brings more than 15 years’ experience advising public and private companies, directors and officers, and insolvency practitioners on resolving complex disputes and managing insolvency challenges.
He joins Thynne + Macartney from a mid-tier commercial law firm and previous roles as in-house counsel and member of the executive management team at a leading receivables management firm.
“It is an exciting time to be joining Thynne + Macartney,” said Jos, “Working closely with clients of the firm to meet the current economic challenges and helping them to not only survive but thrive during times of constraints is a key strength of the team.”
Chairman of Partners and Disputes + Insolvency group leader Marc Maskell welcomed Jos to the team saying, “Jos’ appointment enhances our firm’s disputes capability, and expands our corporate and personal insolvency and debt recovery practice.”
“The firm is seeing a steady increase in clients seeking insolvency, debt recovery and dispute advice, particularly from directors of small to medium sized businesses. Jos’ in-house and firm experience is well placed to provide clear and strategic guidance to SME clients and industry professionals.”
Earlier this year it was reported by the ABC that the ATO was chasing more than $34 billion worth of debts owed by small businesses and self-employed Australians, many of which had been delayed by COVID. Current thinking is that insolvencies could reach post-GFC levels which is supported by FY23 ASIC statistics indicating that corporate insolvencies totalled 10,366, the highest level since 2019.
