Thynne + Macartney Leading in the Regions – 2016 Australasian Law Awards

14 April 2016

Thynne + Macartney has been announced a Finalist in the Australasian Law Awards in the category of State / Regional Firm of the Year.

“Thynne + Macartney has been breaking down barriers for Queenslanders since 1893 and continues this focus today. We have acted for some of the State’s largest organisations for over a centuary, including religious bodies and some of Australia’s largest media outlets. Our goal is to provide peace of mind in a constantly changing legal and economic landscape,” Mr Bill Loughnan, Chairman of Partners said.

Although Thynne + Macartney’s head office is in Brisbane, the Agribusiness Team regularly visit their rural clients on a Western Visits Program including several trips a year to Roma, Emerald, Longreach, Charleville and Rockhampton.

“The firm recognises that Queensland is a vast State and face to face contact with clients is important to create a collaborative process of exploring possibilities and finding a better way,” Bill Loughnan said.

In May, the firm is taking part in RideWest; a seven day, 1,237km cycle from Brisbane to Longreach supporting the Royal Flying Doctors mental health program for rural and remote areas. Mark Winn, a Commercial Partner and Hannah Byrne, an Agribusiness Lawyer, are undertaking the gruelling challenge and fundraising $10,000 to help those confronted with mental health problems regain control in their lives.

“It’s breaking new ground for the firm, but we have long-standing links with the rural community in Queensland. RideWest gives us another opportunity to support them,” Bill Loughnan said.

In 2015, the Thynne + Macartney had some exciting acquisitions. Tim Quirk, the Planning & Environment specialist, spent two years building his practice and was promoted to equity partnership in December 2015.

The firm also acquired a new partner, Mark Winn, to the Business Advisory and Dispute Resolution Team. Mark has nearly 25 years experience in commercial and property law, as well as commercial disputes and insolvency. As part of Mark’s team, the firm also acquired Dominique Mayo, an experienced commercial lawyer.

The firm also brought on board Karen Gaston, the new Head of Private Clients. Karen has over 10 years experience in succession law, specialising in estate litigation. She has recently extended her practice to estate administration and estate planning.

“Recently, Thynne + Macartney has moved towards a younger, more innovative leadership team. This brings a fresh perspective to the firm,” Bill Loughnan said.

“As part of this change in perspective, in 2015 we convened a branding committee to create a vision for the future of the Thynne + Macartney brand so the firm could move forward with our clients without restriction,” Bill Loughnan said.

Thynne + Macartney has also developed a full suite of staff benefits and initiatives designed to embed the new brand values in the corporate culture and support them over time. This touches on recruitment, performance reviews, reward programs, staff entertainment, health & well-being programs, remuneration, leave entitlements and flexible working arrangements.

“These benefits allow staff to express their individuality through greater choice regarding their work arrangements and career,” Bill Loughnan said.
