Vicky Martin Joins STEP QLD Committee for 2023

Thynne + Macartney is excited to announce the appointment of Vicky Martin to the Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners Queensland (STEP QLD) 2023 Committee.

Vicky will work alongside other appointed trusts and estates practitioners to co-ordinate the strategy and development of STEP in Queensland.

STEP is worldwide network of over 100 branches and chapters and its members include lawyers, accountants, financial planners, trustee company employees and other professionals engaged in trusts and estates.

The STEP Queensland Branch focuses on education, training, representation and networking for its 230+ members.

Vicky will be involved in the organising of the STEP Queensland annual conference as well as assisting with events for STEP members and emerging trusts and estates professionals.

Vicky’s nomination to join the STEP committee has come following our Wills + Estates Partner, Ashleigh Poole stepping down after being on the committee for five years.

A passionate Wills and Estates practitioner, Vicky answers below some questions about what she hopes to accomplish as a member of the committee.

What do you see as STEP’s priorities in the next 12 months?

In 2023, STEP QLD will continue to provide high-level educational seminars on topics of interest to its members, through its regular lunchtime seminars and roundtable discussions. It will also be hosting its annual conference which gets better and better each year.

What would you say to junior lawyers thinking about joining STEP?

Being part of STEP offers great opportunities for junior trusts and estates lawyers to build on their skills by attending their regular seminars. These seminars are presented by other practitioners and members of the judiciary and provide invaluable practical training on all aspects of estate work. They are also an opportunity to become acquainted with other practitioners in the estates and trusts space.

What are you personally hoping to achieve as a member of the STEP Qld Committee?

I have been the beneficiary of a lot of support and encouragement in my career through being a member of STEP.  I would now like to assist to provide this support and encouragement to others.

Why did you decide to become a wills and estates lawyer?

I became a lawyer because I wanted to help people. I enjoy practising as a wills and estate lawyer because I get to meet people from all walks of life. I learn about their family dynamics and help them to come up with practical solutions to issues that might arise, whether it be in relation to their estate planning, an estate administration or estate litigation.
